Been In A Wreck? 3 Things To Do Before The Tow Truck Drives Away

Posted on: 2 November 2015

If you've been in a wreck and had to call a local towing company, you might be ready to get back home as soon as possible so that you can get some rest and clear your head. However, there are a few things that you should do before the tow truck drives away. Follow these tips before leaving the scene to avoid future problems after your accident.

1. Get the Contact and Billing Information

It can be easy to forget the name on the side of the tow truck after an upsetting and emotional day. Ask for a business card, or jot down the name, phone number and billing information for the company that picks up your vehicle. You will need to know where your car is and how much the tow costs when contacting your insurance company; for example, your insurance adjuster may need to see the vehicle and may need to ask for the bill in order to cover the financial responsibility.

2. Remove Your Personal Items from the Car

You might forget all about the personal items that are in your car after getting in an accident, but you might need them later. Plus, you'll probably feel peace of mind knowing that your documents and valuables are in your possession and not sitting in a shop or lot somewhere. Take the time to remove your insurance paperwork, car registration paperwork, valuable items -- such as GPS systems, stereo fronts or digital music players -- and anything else that you might need while your car is in the shop.

3. Take a Few Pictures

It's a good idea to snap a few pictures of what your car looks like after the accident. You may need these photos to file a claim or to file a lawsuit, if you are planning on hiring a lawyer. It's best to get pictures as soon after the accident as possible, so try to snap them before the tow truck driver gets the car loaded and pulls it away. Then, you will have evidence of the damage that was done to your car.

If you have been in a car wreck, it is important to take the right steps in the aftermath if you want everything to go as smoothly as possible. Contact a local towing company, like Kingsway Towing Group, if you have any further questions or need help with a tow after an accident.
