3 Tips To Stay Safe While Waiting For An Emergency Tow Truck

Posted on: 9 May 2016

If your car suddenly breaks down on the side of the road, you'll need to call an emergency towing service. Once their tow truck driver gets to you, they should be able to take care of your car and give you a ride to the garage they're taking your car to -- if you need a ride. Until they arrive, however, you may be in a vulnerable position. If you're ever broken down on the side of the road, here are some ways to stay safe while you wait for an emergency tow truck to arrive.

Leave Your Car and Go to a Safe Location

If you're car's in a somewhat safe but potentially vulnerable place, such as the side of the road where a swerving vehicle could hit it, get out of it if at all possible. Head somewhere safer if there is a safer place to go. A restaurant, coffee shop, gas station or store nearby is usually a good choice. If the weather's nice, you might be able to wait outside -- just make sure you walk far enough away from your car so you won't be hit in a freak accident.

Stay in Your Car, and Keep Your Seat Belt On

If there's nowhere you can go to, your car may be the safest place to wait. For instance, if there are no stores or restaurants nearby and it's too cold to wait outside, you might have to remain in your car.

When waiting in your car, you should keep your seat belt on. It might be inconvenient, but your seat belt will keep you in place if your car is struck by a passing vehicle. If you don't wear your seat belt and another car hits yours, you might be launched from your seat.

Call the Police If You're in Traffic's Path or an Unsafe Area

If you ask them to, many police units will send an officer to wait for an emergency tow truck. There are two reasons why you might want an officer with you. First, if your car isn't clear of traffic, they can direct traffic around your disabled car. Second, if you broke down in an unsafe neighborhood, they can provide protection from criminals. Both are perfectly legitimate reasons for calling the police.

Once a towing driver arrives, you and your car should be taken care of. Until they get to where you are, though, make sure you stay safe.
